This half-day seminar shows how hospitals can plan capacity and staff deployment in a more forward-looking way. Many hospitals still plan in a decentralised and reactive manner, with static capacity allocation and locally managed patient flows. Using selected examples and project results, the seminar presents data- and model-based methods from operations management – from strategic and tactical decisions to operational control. Topics include the limits of classical planning, shift and duty scheduling with AI support and staff participation, operating theatre planning and bed management, and an ongoing Innosuisse project on simulation-based optimisation of patient flows. It is aimed at specialists and managers in capacity and bed management, OR planning, staff scheduling and healthcare process management, and leaves room for open discussion on participants’ own questions.
